Safeguarding in Odin Games
Odin Games is used by students working towards GCSE Maths, so most of our users are children. This page sets out plainly what a student can see, who can reach them, and what a school controls. It is written for designated safeguarding leads and network managers as much as for parents.
What other students can see
Students are identified to their peers by a username they choose, never by their legal name. Real first and last names, and age, are stripped from every profile response served to another user — they are not merely hidden in the interface.
Each student controls their profile visibility: public, friends only, or private. Profile photographs are not supported anywhere in the product; avatars are chosen from a fixed set of illustrated cosmetics.
Who can contact a student
There is no open messaging in Odin Games. There are no direct messages, no comments, and no free-text profile fields visible to other students.
A connection between two students requires one of them to share a friend code or exact username, and the other to accept. Requests can be declined, friendships removed, and users blocked. A blocked user cannot re-open a connection.
Voice chat
Voice chat is disabled in every class battle a teacher sets. Any room attached to a class, or restricted to class members, has voice turned off in the product — it is not a setting a teacher has to remember to switch off.
Outside of school-set activity, in the public multiplayer rooms students can join in their own time, optional voice chat is available. It is off until a student explicitly joins the voice channel, and they can leave or mute at any time. Schools should be aware that this feature exists on the consumer side of the product even though it never appears in Teacher Hub activity.
What teachers can and cannot see
A teacher sees only students actively enrolled in a class they own. There is no cross-school visibility, and no access to a student's activity outside the classes they share with that teacher.
Students can switch off analytics sharing. When they do, the teacher still sees that the student is on the roster — so nobody disappears from a class list — but performance metrics are withheld rather than estimated or inferred.
Photographs of student work
One optional feature, Show Your Work, asks a student to photograph their handwritten working so it can be given method-level feedback. A teacher must switch it on for a revision task; it is never available on formal assessments, and never replaces a teacher's mark.
Images are stored in the EU (Ireland) and analysed in the UK. They are deleted immediately after feedback is generated unless the teacher has opted to keep them for review, in which case they are purged automatically seven days after the task's due date. Images are not used to train foundation models. Students confirm each photo before it is sent.
Competition and wellbeing
Class leaderboards are scoped to the class, so students are compared only with the group their teacher chose. Formal assessments carry no points, streaks or cosmetic rewards, which keeps "this counts" work separate from the competitive layer.
Reporting a concern
Any question can be reported from within the product using the flag control shown alongside it. For conduct, account, or child-protection concerns, contact us directly at contact@odingames.io and mark the subject line Safeguarding. We aim to acknowledge safeguarding reports within one working day.
Reports that indicate a child is at risk are escalated to the school's designated safeguarding lead where the student is linked to a school, and to the relevant authorities where the law requires it.
Data protection
Student data is held in the EU (Ireland) and handled under UK GDPR. When a school uses Odin Games, the school is the data controller and Odin Games acts as processor under a written agreement. Full detail of lawful bases, retention periods and subprocessors is in our Privacy Policy.
Schools carrying out due diligence can request our data processing agreement, subprocessor register and retention schedule from contact@odingames.io.
